An officer walks the venue, times the route, finds the side entrance and a room to wait out a delay, and agrees with venue staff who may go backstage. You need an armed detail when there is a specific, credible threat of violence against the principal.
Think of a stalker with a history of violence or a former employee who has made threats. In California, an officer can carry a gun on duty only with a BSIS firearm permit on top of the guard card. CAL does not staff armed posts, and we would rather say so than sell you a detail that does not fit the threat.
Report any credible threat to police first. For threats tied to work, an employer can also ask the court for a workplace violence restraining order under Code of Civil Procedure Section 527.8.
